If you don’t have a cloth tape, use a piece of string and a builder's measuring tape or a yard stick. Get the string measurements, hold the point where the string end reaches and measure it against a builder’s tape or yard stick. Got it!
Get the Measurements Right The First Time...
- Have your assistant make a flush neck measurement to the point where the collar ends should meet. For a snug fit add a ½ inch. And for a loose fit add one inch (1”). Round off the neck measurement to the nearest quarter inch. This allows free breathing and neck maneuvering.
- For the sleeve measurement, the tape is held on the outer edge of the shoulders, down to the first knuckle on the little (pinky) finger. Subtract 1 to 1½” from the length depending on how you like your sleeves.
Another method is holding your arm across the chest and let you taper measure from the shoulder outer edge, around the elbow to the nape of the wrist. Your suit sleeves should be 1 to 1½” shorter than your dress Shirt.
- Cuff measurement is taken at the wrist. Make a flush measurement and add 1½ to 2 inches for comfort. Add an extra ½ inch if you wear a large watch. Round off the cuff measurement to the nearest quarter inch. You should not be able to pull on you dress shirt without unbuttoning the cuffs.

Body twist and arm movement must feel comfortable without putting stress on the garment.
- Take the hip measurement around the widest point. Add 2 inches for a loose fit and round off to the nearest full inch. The right hip width won’t overstretch the fabric when you sit and with the right tail length, the shirt won’t plop from your pants when hands are raised.
- Measure the part where the waist is at its widest. Add another 2 inches to the nearest full inch. No sloppy shirt waist.
- The shoulder distances are measure from the outer edges. Add a ½ inch for good fit and round off to the nearest ½ inch.
- For the upper body length, place the tape at he base of the neck and shoulder top. Measure to the point where the buttock ends and the legs began. Round of the measurement to the nearest inch, and you’re d
