The use of logos
Vector vs Raster Design
A great design logo can be reduced to a ¼ inch in one color, to fit on the side of a regular pencil or pen and still be recognized. The best logo designs are produced in vector base software, rather than, raster base software. Adobe Illustration CS2 and Macromedia FreeHand are vector softwares. Adobe PhotoShop and Corel Paint Shop Pro are raster softwares.
Vector images can be enlarged or reduced to many sizes and still retain their sharpness.
Raster images can be reduced but never enlarged beyond the size that they are designed for without turning muddy, distorted or pixilated.
It is wise to create you raster images 20 - 30% (percent) larger than the desired size. Reducing the raster image to 70 - 80% defines your image.

There are three basic logo types:
- sign or icon,
- abbreviated text or name text,
- combination of text and icon.
Design logos in the same industry should differ from each other, in order to avoid confusion among corporate companies, businesses, events, organizations, products or services. True logotypes should not be confused with symbols. Emblems, flags and coat of arms are symbols not to be mistaken for logos.
Logo slogans / Tagline
You will notice logos with slogans as apart of their interface. A brand slogan, also called a tagline is used to enhance the business identity of the brand name. Note, an advertising promotion slogan can change often, but a brand or trademark slogan remains the same for a long period.
Examples of popular brand slogans:
- Amazon.com: “And you’re done.”
- Cingular: “Raising the bar.”
- KFC: “We do chicken right!”
- PETCO: “Where the pets go.”
- Verizon: “We never stop working for you.”

There is also the corporate logo shirt for corporate companies, for times when you don’t need to wear a suit and tie, but still need that professional presents. When employees wear your promotional embroidered shirts and embroidered caps with your company’s trademark logo or business logo on them, your company will be recognized and remembered by the general public.
